Things to do in the Bommelgaard surroundings

Hiking and biking

When you like nature, Bommelgaard is a perfect place to start your walking or biking tour. You need not to go far for the floodplains: just walk up the dyke and there they are. Very nearby is the 'Hurnse kil', the nature reserve near our village of Hurwenen. This area was created in 1639 in a cut-off arm of the river Waal. At high tide in the river, water flows through the area. Hurwenen Kil is an extremely rich nature reserve and a favourite spot for birds and nature lovers. In Bommelgaard, 5 walking routes through the floodplains are waiting for you on paper, they are also here on the website.

In the Bommelerwaard you could also walk a number of so-called 'Klompenpaden' . These are the most beautiful walks on farmland. During these walks, you can enjoy the peace, small scale and combination of culture and nature. There are 5 Klompenpaden in the Bommelerwaard. More information about the Klompenpaden and other interesting tourist opportunities in Bommelerwaard can be found on the website of TRIP Bommelerwaard. If you are going to cycle, you may want to make use of a summer ferry across the Waal or Maas, in which case it is useful to check in advance whether they are sailing at that time and how often.

A nice bicycle tip perhaps: on the website 'Happen en Trappen' you will find the 'tastiest' bicycle tours of the Netherlands. A day of cycling through beautiful surroundings and delicious dishes at five different restaurants. A 50 km route starts in Zaltbommel.

Also we would like to mention the National Park Loonse and Drunense Dunes. From Bommelgaard it takes half an hour by car to get to the Giersbergen car park, one of the starting points for a beautiful bike ride or walk through this area of woodland, heathland and, above all, a lot of sand. It is one of the largest shifting sands areas in Western Europe.

Eating, drinking and sniffing (culture)

There are restaurants within walking and biking distance. We mention ‘Brasserie de Roskam’ (5 minutes walking), Restaurant ‘De Gouden Molen’ (3 km biking) and ‘Bistro In Petto’ (also 3 km biking).

You'll find real cultural activities in the beautiful town Zaltbommel only 7 km biking. Within half an hour by car (30 km) there is the picturesque Buren, the 'Pearl of the Betuwe'. Also the fortress town Heusden (30 km) is within half an hour driving. The same goes for the beautiful situated fortress town Woudrichem (25 km), also known as Woerkum. If you want to go to the 'big city' you can do that as well: within 20 minutes you will be in the centre of 's Hertogenbosch (20 km).

For lovers of castles we mention Castle Loevestein (23 km) and Castle Ammersoyen (14 km).

And else...

And if you don't want all of that - just stay in Bommelgaard itself: find yourself a nice place in the garden or stay inside and read a book, watch a movie or listen to your favorite music.
