In this section we wrote down various things about Bommelgaard: information about the interior, the use of devices, parking, final cleaning and also some real rules... Just read it through to get in the right mood to come to Bommelgaard!

Garbage You can dispose your (separated) waste in the kitchen, there are 4 black containers in one of the kitchen drawers. We have a container for paper, one for fruit and vegetables ('GFT'), one for plastic, drinking cartons and cans ('PDB') and a container for the rest. Please dispose of the bin bags in the wheelie bins at the car park when you leave! If you stay with us for more than a few days, there are spare bags in the drawer under the sink. By the way, you can leave bottles and glass jars in the crate in the central heating room.

Bathroom In the bathroom you will find a walk-in shower, a washing bassin with shaving mirror, a hair dryer and a toilet. For each guest there are towels, bath towels and washing cloths available. Staying longer than a week? Then of course we have new sets for you.

Barbecue The barbecue is under the porch, it is a Weber Genesis II E-410. A Primagaz gas bottle has already been mounted. When the bottle is empty, you’ll find another one in the shed. When using the barbecue please be very careful and take all necessary precautions and common safety measures. Also we’d ask you not using more gas burners than necessary. Last but not least we expect you to clean the barbecue rack and accessories afterwards for the next time. If you want any help with the ignition or with mounting a gas bottle, please ask us (rather than through trial and error…).

Sound and vision On the television cabinet is a brief instruction for using the equipment for picture and sound. These instructions are written as if you are a novice at using modern equipment. If you are not a digital illiterate, please do not feel offended. Nevertheless, if you still have questions: feel free to ask, hopefully we can help you!

Storage space In the small room downstairs there is - apart from the central heating - also a washing machine, a drying rack, a hoover, an iron, an ironing board, there is a coat rack for your coats, there is a dressing mirror, a cooking apron and a crate for bottles and glass jars. Oh yes, there is even a microwave! Furthermore, you can store your bags, suitcases and things like that there. Close the door and you won't see a thing!

Capacity Bommelgaard is suitable for a maximum of 2 persons. So you need to know that it is not the intention to invite friends or family for a drink or dinner during the day. Bommelgaard itself, our grounds and the surrounding area are just not suitable for that. In case you’ve got a young baby, we don’t want to be a nudge, so you can bring it in! In that case please bring your own travel cot as well. Then there is no need the baby should sleep in the big bed or on the floor.

Sustainability For us, sustainability has become more and more important. Therefore we separate our garbage and we try not to spill gas, water and electricity. And we’re not talking about the 1 of 2 euro extra costs for us in case you don’t bother. No, it’s really to prevent wasting stuff and about the preservation of our beautiful planet earth. It would be great if you’d join us! And if you want some tips to make your stay in Bommelgaard as sustainable as possible, don't hesitate to ask us!

Final cleaning Remember how clean and tidy it was when you arrived?! We would really appreciate it if you would leave Bommelgaard clean and tidy when you leave. And would you please dispose of your bin bags in the bins by the car park when you leave? Thank you. If something has broken during your stay, please be so kind as to tell us about it, to avoid unpleasant surprises for us or for the guests who come after you.

Food & drink To be clear: Bommelgaard is only there for your stay, you arrange your own food and drinks. There is a PLUS supermarket in Rossum, just fifteen minutes' cycling from Bommelgaard.

Instructions for use The manuals for all appliances are in the magazine rack at the bottom of the cupboard against the long wall. In the storage room, there is another one of those reading trays - it contains the booklets with all kinds of assembly instructions and a manual for the central heating and so on, so you won't have to look for anything there easily.

Fence Our driveway can be closed with an electrically operated fence. When you arrive, the gate will be open for you and we will give you a remote control with the key to Bommelgaard so that you can open and close the gate when you leave by car or bicycle or when you come back. If the gate is open - please leave it open. And if it is closed - close it again when you have passed through, thank you! By the way, there is also a pedestrian gate, which you can use - by hand - if you are walking.

Dog The house dog of Bommelgaard is called Sara, a Swiss (white) shepherd. She was born exactly in the middle of 2022 and has been our permanent housemate ever since. Sara is always nearby and although she doesn't harm a fly, she can be a bit enthusiastic from time to time... Of course, we have raised her “as she should be” so that would mean that you will not be bothered by her at all. Are you still a little or a lot afraid of dogs? Let us know and we will take that into account even more.

Internet You will receive the WiFi code from us on arrival.

Greenhouse We once had a very large willow. A showpiece and eye-catcher in the garden, this willow suffered a few years ago. A combination of dry summers and strange decisions by the water board about groundwater levels killed the tree. In July 2022, the tree was cut down and a week later, a beautiful Victorian garden greenhouse with an area of over 14 square metres was installed on its spot. A rain barrel is not missing either. In the greenhouse, we started sowing, growing, cultivating and even harvesting a little in 2023. Well, that harvest could still be a bit bigger, we were still learning. Now we are in our third year and we have quite a taste for it! In 2025, we are growing tomatoes, spring onion, cabbage lettuce, courgette, peppers and cucumber as vegetables and the herbs this year consist of oregano, thyme, basil, coriander and parsley. Anyway, we are doing our best to fill in the vacant spot in the centre of the garden after the willow. Feel free to take a look at it if you like.

Kitchen The kitchen is equipped with a fridge (with a small freezing compartment), dish washer, gas stove with oven, a Nespresso coffee machine (incl. 2 coffeecups), watercooker and toaster. Kitchen textiles are available and furthermore you can expect the most commonly used inventory like pans, bowls, cutting boards, cutlery and tableware. If you are looking for a microwave oven - we have one too - you will find it in the storage room on top of the washing machine. And if you prefer to drink coffee differently, there is a percolator and a “classic” filter coffee maker at the bottom of the wall cabinet. You'll have to bring your own coffee then, filters are usually there. Furthermore we would like to ask you not to use the kitchen counter as a cutting board, because the counter is not scratch resistant. You’ll find enough boards in the drawers, so there’s no need to be sad about that. The same goes for hot pans and (oven) bowls: since the counter is not heat resistant please use the black and white coasters – you’ll find them on the counter and in one of the drawers. We are sure you’ll manage that. And finally the request to use baking paper if you put something on the baking tray in the oven, there is plenty of baking paper in the drawer where you also find the oven dishes and oven gloves, the oblong box says 'baking paper'...!

Chickens Our approximately 10 chickens scratch around in their generous and giant cosy chicken enclosure. They have just under 700 square metres at their disposal so they don't have to get in each other's way and yet sometimes they do. We currently have one black Barnevelder laying hen, one Welsumer hen and eight brown Barnevelder laying hens. Sometimes a hen says goodbye and that is usually not so nice. Some hens are still young and don't lay an egg yet. The other hens do so just when they feel like it. So the laying is not very regular and unfortunately there is not always a surplus of eggs. Still, sometimes we have more eggs than we need. In that case, we will ask you to help us a little with egg consumption - only if you want to, of course. By the way: the chickens love leftover cooked potatoes, pasta, rice and vegetables and feeding is free!

Accidents In the heating room there is a first aid kit - the box is quite orange, so you can’t miss that.

Parking your car of bike You can park your car in front of the big house on the left by the bins. Do you have bicycles with you? You can park them at Bommelgaard or in the barn, there's plenty of room! Chargers for electric bicycles can be found outside Bommelgaard and in the shed. We do ask you to park your bike on the stone paths and through the gravel and not through the grass.

Cat Bommelgaard's house cat is called Jonna. On the one hand, she is always quite curious, so she will probably come and visit. On the other hand, she is quite keen on her privacy, in other words: she is rather frightened and therefore has a pretty short fuse... So here's a tip: leave her alone, that's good for her and for you.

No smoking Perhaps needless to say, we mention that Bommelgaard is smoke-free. And outside? Eh, if the smoke doesn't get too close... And for the leftovers, by the way, we have a neat ashtray available. If you empty the ashtray, could you please put it outside in the black bin by the car park?

Shoes We would like to see - in line with international custom - that you take off your shoes outside (there is a shoe cabinet outside) and at least do not enter the stairs and bedroom with shoes!

Bedroom The bedroom is accessible by a regular staircase. In the bedroom you’ll find a double bed. These beds are made with 2 single mattresses and 2 single duvets. The beds are neatly made on arrival, so ready to get in! Staying longer than a week? Then we have a new set for you if you wish - just make it up yourself in that case. By the way, the night lights are equipped with a built-in USB connection. Wondering how to turn on and off these lights? Try pressing on the cover…

Games In Bommelgaard there are 2 packs of playing cards and Yahtzee. Do you love games and you feel like something else? In the big house we have a large collection of board games including Rummikub, Scrabble, Risk, Stratego, Dixit, Linkee and Triviant (the first version!). The disheveled boxes show you how often they have been played... We also have games like Pisa, Jenga, Pim Pam Pet and Mikado. If you want to play chess, you can do that too. If you feel like playing one of these games: just ask us and we will get it for you.

Darkening In the roof window in the bedroom there is a darkening roller blind. The curtain starts at the top, just pull it down using the aluminium handle until you are at the bottom or until you think it’s dark enough. Elsewhere in Bommelgaard there are several other roller blinds, also on the entrance door. Darken and blind as much as you like. If there are any questions about it, you’ll know where to find us.

Lights At the entrance, you will find wall switches for the main lighting downstairs. The large pendant light in the loft is switched with the wall switch upstairs, so you can walk upstairs with light on and turn off the light there. The same goes for the bedroom: the wall switch next to the door is switched with the light switch by the bed, so you can get into bed with the light on. The other lamps speak for themselves: once you find the on/off switch, you can make light. Two particularities: in the bathroom, the first wall switch controls the light, the switch next to it activates the mechanical ventilation. That turns on after a few seconds and - if you turn the switch off again - turns off after a while. Another peculiarity is the light in the extractor hood: the round button at the bottom of the extractor hood serves that purpose, which might take some searching... Finally: if a lamp is broken or is going to be broken, just let us know, there's a good chance we'll be able to give you a replacement right away.

Heating Downstairs there is underfloor heating, upstairs there is a radiator and in the bathroom there is a towel radiator in addition to underfloor heating. In the cold months, the temperature of the underfloor heating is controlled via a programme, so it is always pleasant. The radiators in bathroom and bedroom can be switched on or off separately. Enneh - please don't leave the outside door open, but close it every time - even on arrival and departure! Especially when it's colder outside than inside, heat leaks out very quickly. Because of the underfloor heating, it then takes a while before the temperature is back on track. Thanks!

Departure You should leave Bommelgaard on your day of departure no later than 10.00 am. This gives us enough time to make everything tiptop for the guests who come after you. This is often the same day. Please knock on a window or door when you leave, so we can say goodbye.

Questions, remarks, complaints or compliments We do our utmost to make your stay convenient and comfortable and to offer you ‘value for money’. If there is anything to ask or tell us, positive or less positive: don’t feel any thresholds to do so, because we will give you fair answers to your questions, we take complaints very serious and of course: we’d love to receive your compliments!
